Supreme Court Strikes Down Anti-Abortion Provisions in Texas Case

Milken Institute School of Public Health Experts Available to Comment on Landmark Court Case

WASHINGTON, DC (June 27, 2016) — Today the Supreme Court voted 5 to 3 to strike down a Texas law that made it harder for women to get abortions, a ruling that is being hailed as a victory for women’s health.  In January, nearly 60 leaders in public health submitted an amicus brief to the High Court arguing that the Texas laws would limit access to abortions and create a “grave risk to the public health.” The ruling today agreed with that argument and is considered one of the most significant decisions from the Supreme Court in two decades.

Experts from the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University are available to comment on the Supreme Court case and the implications for public health.

To schedule interviews, please contact Kathy Fackelmann at 202-994-8354 or [email protected]

Sara Rosenbaum, JD, Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Law and Policy, can comment on the legal aspects of the case and the implications for public health.

Susan F. Wood, PhD, Associate Professor of Health Policy and the Executive Director of the Jacobs Institute of Women’s Health, can talk about how the ruling is a victory for women’s health, not just in Texas, but around the nation.
