Dr. Clifton joined the Biostatistics Center in 1997. For the past 20 years, her research has focused on maternal and child health. Dr. Clifton is the Principal Investigator for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units (MFMU) Network Data Coordinating Center. The aims of the MFMU Network are to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, and to evaluate the efficacy and safety of therapeutic products used during pregnancy and lactation. Dr. Clifton collaborates with clinical investigators on the design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of clinical studies. Dr. Clifton also leads the Data Coordinating Center for the NICHD funded Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis by Genomic Sequencing which is evaluating the utility of prenatal genome sequencing among pregnancies with fetal anomalies.  Dr. Clifton has ongoing collaborations with the NICHD Neonatal Research Network, NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative, NICHD Maternal and Pediatric Precision in Therapeutics (MPRINT) Initiative, NIH Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative, and the Foundation for the NIH.
