Denise R. Smith, DHA, MBA, CPA, has served since 2016 as an adjunct faculty, teaching healthcare finance in the Health Policy and Management Department at George Washington University. She is Associate Professor of Accounting fulltime at Brenau University College of Business and Mass Communications in Gainesville, GA, where she directs and teaches Master of Accountancy courses. Previously, Denise taught Healthcare Administration for nine years at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina.

Denise is a former hospital CFO, having served both for profit and not for profit organizations throughout the Southeastern U.S. She also served as a corporate Revenue Manager for Community Health Systems in Brentwood, TN, and as regional Decision Support Director for HCA in Georgia. Her management and finance experience extends to all provider types over a twenty-year period. In addition to her experience in healthcare finance, Denise is a Certified Public Accountant and has been the owner of a CPA firm and audit partner of a local firm in North Carolina. She has received awards for Service Excellence in 2006, MBA Teacher of the year in 2009, and the University President’s Community Engagement Award in 2016. She is currently an officer of the Georgia Society of CPAs.

Dr. Smith holds a Doctorate in Health Administration for the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management from Brenau University in Gainesville, GA, and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Gardner-Webb University. She has been a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
