Employer Research Resource: The Washington Business Journal

Anyone can look for a job on Idealist or Monster, but really smart job seekers know that using less obvious leads to open positions can result in a big payoff. Read on to learn about a useful resource free to the GW and SPHHS communities.

What is the Washington Business Journal? It’s a print and online resource which publishes breaking news on business in the Washington, DC area.

Will I find job listings in the journal? There are some jobs listed, but the value of this publication to job seekers lies in the information you’ll find. News about changes in leadership, executive profiles, industry trends, new businesses, etc. can help you find out about possible job leads and assist you in preparing excellent application materials.

So how does a publication focused on business relate to me as a public health/exercise science/health administration student or alum? The journal publishes an industry section on Health Care that is especially relevant to the SPHHS community.

I don’t currently live in DC/I don’t plan to continue to live in the DC areaThe university’s subscription includes access to business journals in population centers throughout the US. This resource can be especially useful if you are planning on moving to a new city and want to get a feel for the area.

How do I access the Washington Business Journal? If you are on campus, you can access this resource by going to the GW Center for Career Services website. Click on Students/Resources/Resumes & Interviewing/Washington Business Journal.  If you are not on campus, first log in at vpn.gwu.edu and then follow the instructions above.

Which sections of the Journal will be most helpful to me?

  • The Health Care industry section contains news, statistics, and opinion pieces related to health care, insurance, and hospitals.
  • The People on the Move section indicates changes of leadership across industries. This section could help you identify recently vacated positions, as well as give you an indication of trends among the skills and backgrounds of people moving up in the industry.
  • The List published in each weekly issue and the annual Book of Lists publication communicate a lot of information in a quick, easy to read format. The 2013 Book of Lists includes lists related to bioscience employers, environmental consultants, best places to work, fastest growing companies, government contracts awardees, hospitals, outstanding directors, and many others.
  • The BizLeads section contains information on new businesses and corporations in the area.
  • Each weekly issue contains an Executive Profile. When preparing to submit application materials or for an interview, consider searching the archives to see if any of the company’s excutives have been profiled in the Business Journal. This information can give you a bit of insight into the company culture.
