ABHW Public Affairs Intern

The Association for Behavioral Health and Wellness (ABHW) is dedicated to advancing
federal policy and educating the public on mental health and addiction care. By
advocating on behalf of health plans for improved access and higher quality care, we
are focused on ensuring better health outcomes for individuals and communities.
ABHW is the national voice for payers that manage behavioral health insurance
benefits. ABHW member companies provide coverage to over 200 million people in
both the public and private sectors to treat mental health, substance use disorders, and
other behaviors that impact health and wellness. More information is available at

ABHW is seeking a part-time Policy and Communications Intern. The intern will work
with the Sr. Director of Communications and Public Affairs on a variety of government
affairs and communications-related activities.
We are committed to ensuring that our intern has a substantive, skill-building
experience.
ABHW is located in downtown Washington, DC, one block from Metro Center. Please
note, we may consider telecommuting for this position.
Responsibilities:
 Assist with drafting issue briefs, press statements, talking points, and messaging
 Participate in and report on coalition meetings
 Engage on ABHW’s social media platforms
 Help develop executive level strategic presentations
 Assist with other government affairs and communications-related projects as
necessary

Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s degree required, graduate level coursework in health care preferred
 Subject matter knowledge of health care issues, understanding of mental health
and addiction issues a plus

 Health care, public policy, or communications experience or interest
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 Strong organizational, analytical, and time-management skills
 Experienced and well-versed with developing and maintaining social media
platforms to achieve organizational objectives
 Attention to detail
 Capable of independent decision making and taking initiative
 Ability to multi-task and work collaboratively
Compensation:
 Level of stipend is commensurate with experience. We are also willing to work
with the intern to help him/ her receive course work or internship credit with
his/her university, if this is an option of interest.
