EOH Professor Lance Price Featured on Frontline Documentary
On October 14, the PBS investigative reporting series Frontline aired “The Trouble with Antibiotics.” The documentary, which features Professor Lance Price, focuses on the science and politics behind the use of antibiotics by American farmers. Approximately 70 percent of all antibiotics sold are used on farms, and Price’s research has played a key role in deepening our understanding of the health risks posed by the frequent uses of antibiotics in food animals.
The documentary traces the history and controversy over antibiotics in agriculture, discovers gaps in basic data about how antibiotics are used on the farm — and raises questions about why that information does not exist.
A second part of the documentary focuses on a victim of the outbreak of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that inspired Frontline’s investigation of the topic.
