WASHINGTON (May 10, 2021) – The Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity (Mullan Institute), based at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, today announced the 2021-2022 fellows of the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity program. The year-long program honors health professionals with a commitment to health equity and demonstrated leadership potential. This year’s fellows, the fifth class in the program, were selected from a competitive pool of approximately 280 national and global applicants.
“To meet the urgent challenge of health equity, we need creativity and collaboration from different regions and professional sectors,” Guenevere Burke, director of the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity program and an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences, said. “The new fellows are among some of the most promising health equity leaders globally — they are committed to creating partnerships, taking risks, and setting an ambitious vision to advance equitable health outcomes.”
The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity is part of a network of Mullan Institute programs funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies. The fellowship connects health leaders across the globe and advances health equity through training that centers on approaches for creating and sustaining equitable, healthier and more inclusive societies. Part of a larger network of seven Atlantic Fellows programs, the international cadre of Atlantic Fellows will expand over next two decades to a leadership community of thousands.
"This program constitutes a major change strategy to advance our vision as an institute –namely health workforce equity,” Patricia (Polly) Pittman, director of the Mullan Institute, said. “The activists who graduate from the Fellows program are helping to build a diverse health workforce that has the competencies, opportunities, and courage to ensure that everyone can attain their full health potential.”
The new cohort includes health professionals from Iraq, Nigeria, Mexico, United Kingdom, Sudan, Haiti, Nepal, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Nepal, Peru, and United States.
“This new cohort is composed of leaders with a broad range of health concerns who have reached a pivotal point in their careers where they are prepared to use their skills and talents to be champions of health equity,” Selam Bedada, assistant director of Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity, said. “These fellows are creating human-centered solutions to address health disparities and inequities.”
The cohort includes leaders with expertise in mental health, maternal health, rural and refugee health, pediatrics, urban development, veteran’s heath, epidemiology, conflict resolution, health financing, social work, psychology, public health, health policy, medicine, dentistry, and engineering.
