Dr. Rick Berzon is a public health practitioner, social scientist, policy analyst, clinician, researcher and consultant with extensive experience in managing people and projects, as well as in developing, identifying, measuring and evaluating health outcomes, specifically patient-reported outcomes and performance indicators. He has expertise across numerous therapeutic areas, particularly HIV/AIDS, and including infectious diseases, oncology and the central nervous system. Rick has delivered primary and geriatric care; conducted and managed monitoring and evaluation studies and outcomes and implementation research initiatives; designed clinical trials within international and domestic settings; held research management positions within several pharmaceutical firms, including Burroughs Wellcome, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bayer and Boehringer Ingelheim; and served as a program director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Academy of Sciences (Institute of Medicine). His clinical training is as a physician assistant; he earned his doctorate in public health from the Johns Hopkins University, where he concentrated in health services research and health policy. Dr. Berzon's past work at USAID in support of PEPFAR was to develop and apply new epidemiological, clinical and economic methods to outreach, monitor, evaluate and improve the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS health services delivery and capacity building programs in developing countries. His most recent work at the NIH was to identify, develop and operationalize innovative ideas and practices to advance the science of health disparities. He is the author of over forty peer review journal articles and book chapters, and he serves on the International Advisory Board for the journal Quality of Life Research. Rick has been a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Global Health within the Milken Institute School of Public Health for over 10 years.
