Workshop Announcement: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Public Health Education

GWSPH Academic Affairs, GWSPH Master Teacher Academy, and GW Libraries and Academic Innovation is excited to announce a two-part workshop series focused on public health education and GenAI this upcoming Fall 2024. The rise of mass availability generative AI tools is already impacting aspects of the teaching and learning process and creating opportunities and challenges across the academy. Faculty, staff and students are navigating a new set of tools that will continue to transform both the educational process and practice environments.

Part 1 of 2: The GenAI Landscape and Public Health Education, September 6, 2024 10:30-Noon in the 7th Floor Case Study Room and Zoom (workshop sign-up form)

The first workshop session will provide GWSPH faculty members with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of readily available GenAI tools (many of which their students may already be using). We will discuss the capabilities of Large Language Model (LLM) tools such as Open AI ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot and their potential to: author and edit texts, support research, perform data analysis, and support the ideation process. We will also examine media creation tools such as Midjourney, Sora, Adobe Firefly, and their capabilities to create and manipulate media of all types. Faculty attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of the available tools and current capabilities of GenAI, and how these tools may play a role (or be playing an unbeknownst role) in their own courses.

Part 2 of 2: Pedagogical GenAI Applications for the Public Health Classroom, Date TBD  (workshop sign-up form)

The second workshop session will provide a space for GWSPH to hear from one another about successful applications of GenAI we have utilized or are considering utilizing within our own classrooms. The session will also introduce a number of known successful GenAI teaching and learning practices. Attendees of the session should come away from this session with a better understanding of how GenAI is being used within SPH, and ideally with one or more applications of GenAI in mind that they might like to implement in their own courses. 

Workshops will be facilitated by Jason Torres, (Director of Strategic Digital Learning Initiatives), Juan Klopper (Teaching Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics) and Andrew Wiss (Assistant Dean for Academic Innovation and Professorial Lecturer, Health Policy and Management).
