Dr. Gabby Headrick is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Nutrition (major (BS), minor, and dual degree (BS/MPH)). She is also core faculty at the Institute for Food Safety & Nutrition Security and affiliated faculty at The George Washington University Global Food Institute.

Dr. Headrick’s research focuses on optimizing federal nutrition assistance programs to achieve household food security and promote nutrition equity, with a specific focus on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP). Dr. Headrick studies intersections of food equity and nutrition assistance programs in America, in addition to strategies to promote human-centered participant experiences in social benefit programs in the United States. Dr. Headrick also researches local food systems and the impact of municipal food policies and programs in urban settings. She uses both quantitative and qualitative methods paired with community-led research processes to investigate the impact and implementation of programs and policies.

Prior to joining the Milken Institute School of Public Health in Fall 2023, Dr. Headrick earned her PhD in Public Health Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Headrick also holds her Masters of Science in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. In my research, I draw from the fields of nutrition, sociology, and health policy to answer research questions that can inform future programs and policies aimed at promoting equitable access to healthy, culturally preferred, and affordable foods through evidence-based guidance. To date, my research has generated evidence to inform nutrition programs and policy decisions at the municipal and federal levels.

My long-term goal is to continue to collaborate with community leaders, nutrition advocates, and government stakeholders to identify and answer timely nutrition policy-related questions, disseminate the findings, and identify mechanisms to translate the findings effectively and efficiently into actionable change to achieve more just and equitable food systems and social benefit systems in the United States.
