Deanna Kerrigan Starts as Chair of the Department of Prevention and Community Health

Deanna Kerrigan, PhD, MPH, will start July 1 as Chair of the Milken Institute School of Public Health Department of Prevention and Community Health. Kerrigan joins Milken Institute SPH from the American University, where she served as a professor of sociology and director of the Center on Health, Risk and Society.

For more than 25 years, Kerrigan has studied the social and structural factors that affect the health and well-being of marginalized populations worldwide, including stigma, discrimination and violence. Kerrigan, an expert on HIV prevention, has led studies to develop comprehensive and community-driven public health interventions among underserved women in Latin America, the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa.

“I am thrilled to be joining the extraordinary faculty, staff and students at Milken Institute SPH,” Kerrigan said. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to develop and evaluate innovative approaches to generating positive social and behavioral change to impact the health and lives of underserved communities globally.”
