Joel Teitelbaum Appointed to Healthy People 2030 Advisory Committee

November 23, 2016

On November 16, 2016, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the appointment of 13 nationally recognized subject matter experts in health promotion, disease prevention, epidemiology, health literacy, communication, law, and state and local public health practice to serve on the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030. Joel Teitelbaum, JD, LLM, associate professor of health policy and management at Milken Institute SPH was one of the 13 newly appointed experts—and the first lawyer to serve on a Healthy People Committee.

Over the next two years, the Committee will examine current scientific evidence and submit recommendations to the Secretary of HHS with rationales to inform the development and implementation of the nation’s disease prevention and health promotion objectives for Healthy People 2030. Along with public and federal agency comments, these recommendations will be used by HHS to develop the next iteration of the Healthy People initiative.

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health at HHS will lead the development of Healthy People 2030 and host the Advisory Committee’s public meetings. The first meeting will take place on December 1-2, 2016.  For information about the meetings, including how to register to attend, visit www.healthypeople.gov.

Teitelbaum also serves at the Co-Director of the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership, which is based at Milken Institute SPH.
