Avance Center for the Advancement of Immigrant/Refugee Health
The Avance Center builds on an existing university-community collaboration, and employs a unique, multi-level intervention, called Adelante, drawing from lessons learned during a CDC-funded prototype intervention called SAFER Latinos. Adelante uses a modified Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach to build youth, family, and community supports as a prevention strategy. The mission of the George Washington University (GW) Avance Center for the Advancement of Immigrant/Refugee Health is to foster an academic-community collaboration with the Latino immigrant community of Langley Park, MD in order to better understand factors contributing to racial/ethnic minority health disparities specific to this and other immigrant/refugee communities.
Center for Health and Health Care in Schools
Bridging health and education to create a coordinated approach to both, the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools (CHHCS) is an established thought leader, convener, and facilitator of student wellness, positive development, and school success in our local community and across the country. Guided by public health frameworks, CHHCS emphasizes the importance of prevention and the promotion of health in developing equitable educational and developmental environments, and the systemic factors in sustaining these approaches.Through multi-sector and school-connected approaches, we advance policies, systems, and environments to build and sustain strategies that bridge health and learning for all students.
Center for Social Well-Being and Development
The Center for Social Well-Being and Development (CSWD) is a chartered center at the Milken Institute School of Public Health. CSWD works globally to promote the understanding and use of a social-ecological approach to support positive health and social outcomes to reduce vulnerability. The idea of social well-being draws from the World Health Organization's definition of health: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
GW Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health
The GW Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health is committed to improving the health and well-being of women, children, adolescents and families. We’re grounded in a life course perspective as an organizing framework that acknowledges distinct periods in human development and presents both risks and opportunities for interventions.
Since its inception in 1997, our MCH Program has defined health to include physical, psychosocial, cultural, political, and economic factors. To further advance our mission, our Center of Excellence will integrate and strengthen the program’s current education, research, practice and policy activities, and will develop strategic technical assistance projects to meaningfully support MCH efforts in the DC metropolitan area.

The DC CFAR mission is to intensify our multi-institutional effort to promote and support research that contributes to ending the HIV epidemic in Washington, DC and beyond in partnership with government and community.
Situated in the nation's capital at a world-class institution, the Global Women's Institute (GWI) has great depth of experience from not only its own staff, but from the dedicated partners who share their time, knowledge and expertise. GWI collaborates with leaders in the field from right here in Washington, DC, across the country and around the world to build a network of people committed to improving the lives of women and girls.
Mission: To advance gender equality through research, education and action to bring about change.
Cancer Control and Health Equity conducts research on the prevention and control of cancer and cancer-related health disparities. Areas of study include, but are not limited to, tobacco use, obesity and environmental exposures to cancer. This research in turn informs policies that address system-level factors that impact unique populations, such as the LGBTQI community.
Institute for Data, Democracy and Politics
In the heart of the nation's capital, IDDP brings together top researchers from across academic disciplines, works side-by-side with and informs journalists from leading media outlets, advises and helps agenda set with policymakers in the U.S. and Europe, and engages with a variety of organizations that have significant societal influence and reach.
This work is of vital importance in an age when media manipulation, fake accounts, and malicious social media activities are undermining fundamental aspects of societal cohesion and democratic ideals. Abuse, harassment, hate speech, and disinformation abound, with foreign and domestic actors alike taking advantage of key features of digital platforms to target vulnerable and marginalized members of society.
mission: The Institute for Data, Democracy & Politics (IDDP)’s mission is to help the public, journalists, and policymakers understand digital media’s influence on public dialogue and opinion, and to develop sound solutions to disinformation and other ills that arise in these spaces
The mission of the LHRC is:
To increase understanding of the complex and multiple factors that affect health behaviors, and specifically sexual risk behavior, among Latinos in the U.S. and abroad, and among other ethnic minority groups in the U.S.
To advance research concerning health behavior and health disparities by elaborating the role and importance of the cultural, situational, and structural context, as well as the relevant characteristics of the individual person;
To train and nurture future researchers who will advance the field of behavioral health and contribute to a critical knowledge base relevant to public health; and
To increase the group's prominence through academic excellence and extramural funding on health issues among ethnic minority groups, and in doing so, enhance the reputation and visibility of GWU.
The Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness
The Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness will become the leading source in the United States for promising and evidence-based double-, triple-, and quadruple-duty strategies for improving planetary and human health. Activities to support this goal include the implementation and evaluation of strategies to improve health and measure outcomes within the District of Columbia and elsewhere. The Center convenes and collaborates with other groups to promote those strategies, policies, and programs likely to have the greatest impact.
