The GWSPH Office of Academic Affairs and the GWSPH Master Teacher Academy invite faculty and staff to an author talk with Dr. Catherine (Cate) Denial, featuring her book A Pedagogy of Kindness, on Friday, October 3rd, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. ET via Zoom.

The GWSPH Summer Reading Group thoroughly enjoyed exploring this text and the corresponding discussions held over the summer, and members are excited to welcome Dr. Denial for a larger group discussion. Dr. Denial will begin the session with an introduction to her book and key concepts pertinent to GWSPH faculty, followed by an ample Q&A session.

Questions may be submitted in advance to clhatgwu [dot] edu. Submissions are requested 24 hours before the session so they can be shared with Dr. Denial ahead of time. The registration link is provided below.

Book Description:
Academia is not, by and large, a kind place. Individualism and competition are what count. But without kindness at its core, Catherine Denial suggests, higher education fails students and instructors—and its mission—in critical ways.

Part manifesto, part teaching memoir, part how-to guide, A Pedagogy of Kindness urges higher education to get aggressive about instituting kindness, which Denial distinguishes from niceness. Having suffered beneath the weight of just “getting along,” instructors need to shift every part of what they do to prioritizing care and compassion—for students as well as for themselves.
