Milken Institute School of Public Health Launches Genomics Core

Today the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health (GW Milken Institute SPH) launched a genomics core which will help researchers from across the university develop genomic approaches that could lead to solutions for some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as impacts of climate change or HIV infection.

 At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Oct. 22, GW President Tom LeBlanc, Dean of the Milken Institute SPH Lynn Goldman and others celebrated the official opening of the Genomics Core.

“We can now help GW investigators and others use this powerful technology to find answers to research questions in fields that range from conservation biology to public health,” said Keith Crandall, PhD, director of the Computational Biology Institute, which is based at Milken Institute SPH. “The genomics core will also provide hands-on experience to GW students in data generation, analysis and integration with other public health data.”

The Genomics Core provides a centralized service—in this case, nucleic acid extraction, genomic sequencing and other services, along with the technical expertise to assist GW researchers and others who are trying to advance a scientific project that would benefit from genomics analysis.

The Computational Biology Institute brings together interdisciplinary investigators to conduct cutting-edge research that could lead to innovative approaches in preventing, treating and diagnosing diseases as well addressing growing threat of climate change and other major challenges facing the world today.
