WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 3, 2023) — Today, the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University launched a new Women, Youth, and Child Health (WYCH) concentration, as part of its #1-ranked online Master of Public Health (MPH) program. This concentration has been designed to meet the growing demand in the field of maternal and child health (MCH) for master’s level training for professionals looking to explore the social, behavioral, and systems-related determinants that are unique to the health and well-being of women, children, and families around the world.

“The courses in the WYCH concentration have been designed to give students the tools they will need to develop, implement, and evaluate programs that can effectively support the health and well-being of women, children and families everywhere,” said Amita Vyas, PhD, MHS, Director of the school’s MCH Program and Co-Director of the WYCH concentration. “They will graduate with a holistic understanding of health and behavior systems, change models, and effective strategies that they can use in their current and future work.”

Required courses for students in the WYCH concentration include the foundations of maternal and child health, women’s health, global child health, and sexual and reproductive health monitoring. Students will have elective options that include such topics as community health and advocacy, health disparities, and researching violence against women and girls.

"By now being able to engage students online through the MPH@GW program that supports the newly formed WYCH concentration, we are able to extend our resources to our online students,” said Nitasha Nagaraj, MPH, DrPH, Co-Director of the WYCH concentration. “It’s our hope that we can bring our MCH residential students and our WYCH online students together to build a future of public health professionals who will ensure that women and girls are healthy and safe across their lifespans."

The new WYCH concentration is part of the Milken Institute School of Public Health’s fully online MPH@GW program, which is ranked #1 on Fortune Education’s list of best online MPH programs.1  The Milken Institute School of Public Health is ranked No. 11 on U.S. News and World Report’s list of best public health graduate schools.2  Additionally, the school’s MCH program has been recognized by the Health Resources and Services Administration as one of 13 Centers of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health.
