GWSPH Mourns the Loss of Dr. Eliot Sorel
Dr. Eliot Sorel, a pioneering leader in global health and an esteemed colleague and physician, passed away on Oct.13, 2024, at home with his loved ones. He leaves a legacy of innovation and dedication to improving health systems worldwide. "Eliot passed away to the sound of a gentle breeze and soft chimes. He was at home, surrounded by love - as he wished," said his wife, Christiane.
A clinical Professor of Global Health, Health Policy & Management, and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, Dr. Sorel was recognized for his expertise with major organizations, including the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, and the World Bank Group. He was the founding editor of the Global Mental Health and Psychiatry Review and co-founder of the Africa Global Mental Health Institute.
“Eliot was a pioneering leader and creative visionary in global health, dedicated to improving mental health locally, nationally, and globally. He convened experts from around the world to address the vast and largely unrecognized burden of mental illness, inspiring generations of public health students to confront these critical issues. His unwavering commitment to social justice and his role as a mentor have left a lasting legacy that will continue to influence future public health professionals at GWSPH and beyond,” said Dean Lynn Goldman.
Dr. Sorel's groundbreaking TOTAL Health model, integrating primary care, mental health, and public health, was presented at significant international forums. His commitment to mental health was further exemplified as lead author of the American Psychiatric Association's position statements advocating for mental health as a human right and promoting integrated care.
His research on depression and comorbidity in primary care has been published globally, and he was recognized with numerous accolades, including the Rehabilitation International Centennial Award for global mental health leadership in 2023 and the Star of Romania Order of Commander.
Dr. Sorel's passion for mental health access and advocacy impacted countless lives and inspired a generation of health professionals. He will be deeply missed by colleagues, students, and all who were touched by his work. May his memory be a blessing and inspiration for all of us.
"I first met Eliot when I was a third-year medical student at GW on my psychiatry clerkship at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington, and he was an attending psychiatrist teaching GW medical students,” said Dr. Jeffrey Akman, Chair, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. “Eliot had a 40-plus year appointment in the psychiatry department having taught medical students and residents. He was an influential voice in the American Psychiatric Association, Washington Psychiatric Society, and multiple international psychiatric associations.”
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please make donations to Hebrew International Aid Society (HIAS), which helped Dr. Sorel during his stateless years in Paris, or the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI).
