The study and practice of environmental and occupational health (EOH) keeps pace with a world full of change and innovation and the public health challenges that accompany them. To provide prospective students with deeper insight into the field, and the benefits of studying at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, Professor George Gray and Associate Professors Peter LaPuma and Sabrina McCormick engaged in an interactive webinar available on YouTube for viewing. The webinar addresses big-picture topics about the evolving field of EOH and practical questions about studying at the Milken Institute SPH, including:
- The field is unusually broad and addresses problems that people face every day in both the developed and developing worlds. EOH includes chemical toxicity and risks to both workers and citizens, particularly children; the impacts of energy sources including nuclear power; climate change; food-related concerns including antibiotic resistance; inexpensive interventions to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in the developing world; and how to design the places we live and work and the products we use so that they are more environmentally sustainable.
- The benefits of the Milken Institute SPH’s Washington, DC, location and the ability to tap into all the nation’s capital has to offer. From internships to world-renowned speakers and visiting lecturers to the ability to hop on the Metro and see Congress or the Supreme Court in action, the benefits of studying in the nation’s capital are unbeatable, and
- Answers to practical questions about housing and transportation options.
As EOH Department Chair Melissa Perry says, “Graduate studies are a big investment, but the demand for expertise in environmental and occupational health is growing, and our students get jobs. The webinar was a great way to explain how and why the field of environmental and occupational health is growing, answer some top-of-mind questions from prospective students, and share the terrific advantages of studying at GWU.”
While the webinar offers a great entry point for prospective students, the information gathering does not have to stop there. More information is available at our graduate admissions department.
