Professor Wanda Nicholson Elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Her work advances the science of prevention in perinatal and women’s health
Wanda Nicholson, MD, MPH, MBA, FACOG, faculty at the Milken Institute of Public Health, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) this year. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the field of health and medicine.
NAM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements in the medical sciences, health care and public health, along with a commitment to volunteer service. The academy elects no more than 100 members a year.
Dr. Nicholson was recognized for her work in implementing interventions to reduce disparities in chronic disease among reproductive-age women and improving the quality of life for women across the lifespan. She is being honored for her commitment to patient-centered, evidence-based care.
Wanda is professor of prevention and community health and obstetrics and gynecology (joint) at the George Washington University Milken Institute of Public Health and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She directs the Prevention Science Lab in Women’s and Perinatal Health, which generates innovative digital solutions to expand access and optimize perinatal services and clinical prediction models to advance shared decision-making in benign gynecologic care.
The academy cited her leadership in ‘pioneering community-partnered research to develop and implement interventions to reduce health disparities in maternal diabetes and obesity and improve the health of the maternal-child dyad.’
Reflective of her commitment to a sustainable public health workforce and reducing disparities, she is the founder and former director of the Office of Inclusive Excellence at Milken.
On national and international levels, she has served as Chair of the United States Preventive Services Task Force and held board and volunteer senior leadership roles at the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
