Research

Climate change and air pollution are interconnected by common sources of greenhouse gas emissions like the burning of fossil fuels for energy and transportation, as well as natural sources such as wildfires and dust storms. With over 99% of the global population exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollution, the impacts on human health are well-established. EOH research explores interactions between climate change, indoor and outdoor air pollution, sustainability, and public health. For example, research in EOH found that 40 million new global cases of pediatric asthma can be attributed to nitrogen dioxide pollution annually [Anenberg], and exposure to fine particulate matter during pregnancy is associated with low birthweight [Fong]. Furthermore, EOH research has evaluated how air pollution impacts minoritized populations, finding that despite overall decreases in public health impacts associated with exposure to nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter, racial and ethnic relative disparities in health burdens attributable to air pollution have widened in the US over the past decade [Kerr, Goldberg].
