EOH: Environmental & Molecular Epidemiology

Research
EOH research employs advanced biostatistical and epidemiological methods, including large and complex multi-omic and epidemiological datasets. For example, EOH research has used biomarker analysis in children's environmental health research, finding that gestational exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs), a class of endocrine disrupting chemicals, is associated with gestational duration and fetal growth [Kuiper]. EOH research has also used healthcare big data, including health insurance claims data, to examine the real-world health impact of heat exposure on vulnerable populations and develop interactive dashboards for community heat-health vulnerability assessment [Hu]. Additional EOH research has explored how residential greenness modifies the effect of air pollution exposure on cardiovascular mortality at extremely fine spatial and temporal scales [Fong] and characterized exposure to several chemical classes, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), amongst a cohort of pregnant women in California [Applebaum].
EOH researchers have also used innovative molecular approaches to trace the origins of antibiotic-resistance bacteria, including the genomic sequencing of Bacillus anthracis, the bacteria responsible for anthrax disease [Price].
